Aircraft charter into the small regional mining township of Moranbah has grown dramatically in the last year; this small town may now just be one of the hottest spots for mining Fly-in Fly-out (FIFO) activity in Australia.
Moranbah, which is located in the Isaac region, Queensland, was established in 1969 making it one of the youngest towns in the state. In the 2006 census, Moranbah had a population of 7,133; according to the Isaac Region Council the population now exceeds 10,500, an increase of more than 80% in less than two years.
Moranbah sits around 200 km south west of the Queensland coastal town of Mackay, 1048 km NNW of Brisbane, or almost 1000 km south of Cairns. A flight on a charter aircraft from Brisbane to Moranbah takes around 1 hour 40 minutes in a small Turboprop aircraft or around just 1 hour 15 minutes in a small Business Jet carrying up to 10 passengers.
Ongoing growth and production from mining companies in the Bowen Basin has resulted in Moranbah becoming one of Adagold’s most popular charter destinations in 2012. A range of different types of aircraft are being chartered, from 4 or 6 seater light Business Jets through 8 or 10 seat Turboprop aircraft and well as larger aircraft such as the De Havilland Dash-8 and Saab 340.
As well as direct flights from major Queensland hubs such as Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, sometimes clients are able to charter an aircraft to Moranbah from Mackay after connecting with a scheduled Qantas or Virgin regular passenger transport service.
Entry by charter aircraft into the Moranbah airstrip is controlled by the airport owner BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA). Landing approvals must be received prior to any charter aircraft operating into Moranbah. Adagold can provide the necessary application documents and assistance to request landing approvals for all required charter operations.
There are allegedly enough coal reserves in Bowen Basin region to keep this kind of air charter activity going for another 30-50 years. It is even rumoured that the Moranbah Airport will one day be dug up to remove the coal lying directly underneath it.
So, Moranbah may oddly beat Sydney to the development of a second airport.
