The teams left their training base in Darwin, travelling to Cairns aboard a professional team private charter, where they connected with the official carrier, Qantas, for their final leg of the journey. The Australian field hockey teams are among the world’s best. At Tokyo 2020, the Kookaburras (men’s team) won a silver medal, while the Hockeyroos (women’s team) went through the Group Stage undefeated before suffering a shock loss to India in the quarter finals.
The Hockeyroos have won three Olympic Gold Medals (1988, 1996, 2000). The Kookaburras’ solitary Olympic gold came in 2004 in Athens. Their silver medal in Tokyo made it four silvers and five bronze in their 16 Olympic appearances.
