The International Transport Workers’ Federation’s (ITF) Australian branch has claimed seafarers have been kept working on ships for up to 18 months, with Australia’s COVID-19 quarantine restrictions stopping them from setting foot on land. As a result, ship crews have been unable to fly home when their contracts ended. Replacement crews were also unable to work, as they could not take their place for the ships’ next voyages.

The quarter two Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) results showed happiness levels of seafarers at 6.18/10, down from 6.30 in quarter one. People at sea are desperate for solutions to get back home. According to Steven Jones, founder of the Seafarers Happiness Index, the message from ship crews is clear: crew changes are needed, and those who can make them happen must do so.
