Experience Queensland: See baby turtles hatch at Mon Repos

4 Feb, 2019 | News

If you’ve ever dreamed of starring in your own David Attenborough documentary, then seeing thousands of baby turtles hatching on Mon Repos on Australia’s east coast should be your next holiday destination.

Turtle hatching season will soon be in full swing in Queensland. Bundaberg’s Mon Repos beach is the best place on the mainland to view these tiny, adorable sea creatures scuttling across the sand for their first dip in the ocean. And believe us, as one of Australia’s best wildlife experiences, it’s a spectacular sight that you won’t want to miss!

Mon Repos: Queensland’s turtle haven

Mon Repos beach isn’t just another beautiful stretch of the Australian coastline. It’s also one of the most popular nesting areas for loggerhead turtles in the Southern Hemisphere. Between November and January, mother turtles make the arduous trek from the ocean up the beach to settle in the secluded dunes and lay their delicate eggs. The hatching season, from January to March, puts on one of the best wildlife shows in the country! At night, baby turtles clumsily emerge from their shells to race down the beach and onwards to the warm water. And you can witness this natural phenomenon with front row seats!

How to see baby turtles at Mon Repos

Tourism Bundaberg, in conjunction with the Mon Repos Turtle Centre, organise nightly encounters where you have the chance to view baby sea turtles scuttling from the dunes to the water! Rangers take you on a guided tour of the beach, which is closed to the general public after 6 pm, explaining the importance of the Centre’s conservation efforts for these beautiful sea creatures, the nature of their habitat and their mating rituals. If it’s early in the hatching season, you may even see the large mother turtles laying their eggs in the dunes!

More turtle action: day trips to Lady Elliot Island

Keen to see even more turtles? Maybe even swim with a sea turtle in the deep blue ocean? Day trips can be arranged from Bundaberg to the secluded Lady Elliot Island, where Australian sea life is teaming. Here you have the chance to snorkel in crystal clear waters and brush fins with tropical fish, sea turtles, and even manta rays!
