In the land down under, it’s not just about the incredible beaches and coastal hinterlands. The Aussie outback is also filled with breathtaking scenery, history and activities!
We may be biased, but we think a trip to Australia is never complete without a visit to the outback. We’ve created this itinerary so you can explore Western Queensland’s extraordinary history and spectacular landscape in one or two days! Keep reading to journey into the Aussie outback.
Witness all facets of Queensland travelling from the coast to the fabulous outback towns of Winton and Longreach.
Roaring with prehistoric findings, Winton is recognised for its dinosaur discoveries, conservation and research. The region is home to the only evidence of a dinosaur stampede on the planet, and the fossil of a Muttaburrasaurus. Winton is also a destination rich with Australian history and is known as the birthplace of Waltzing Matilda and Qantas.
Take a short flight south-east of Winton and you’ll arrive in Longreach. Immerse yourself in Australian heritage and stunning scenery in this unique outback town. Whether you want to discover the origins of Qantas or learn about living on the land at the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, we’re sure your day will be filled to the (Akubra) brim with fun and entertainment!
Walk with the dinosaurs, learn about the custodians of the bush and discover the history of Qantas.
Learn about fossils and the fantastic dinosaur discoveries of the region at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum. Then, take a guided tour and witness the only known dinosaur stampede on the planet at Lark Quarry Dinosaur Stampede.
Waltzing Matilda Centre
Discover the story behind ‘Banjo’ Paterson’s bush ballad Waltzing Matilda. At the centre, you’ll gain a unique insight into the story behind the music and the historical event it portrays.
Qantas Founders Museum
Interpretive displays, interactive exhibits and an extensive aircraft collection share the founding story of Qantas. Here, you’ll be able to discover the journey of Qantas from its beginnings in 1920, as well as tour 747 and 707 jets. And, if you’re up for an adventure, you can see the aircraft from a different point of view with a walk along the wing of a 747.
Stockman’s Hall of Fame
Known as Australia’s premier outback heritage institution, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame provides a spectacular outback experience. The centre is split into five themed galleries displaying the history of some of Australia’s greatest stock workers, explorers and pastoralists. The museum houses an extraordinary collection of unique objects and images with touch screens and audiovisual presentations to guide you through displays. Then, see the story of stockmen and women come to life at the Outback Stockman’s Show. Featuring trick horses, working dogs, a bull and much more, the show depicts the harsh, rugged and sometimes humorous reality of life on the land.
